Simple.TV launches Kickstarter campaign for support from viewers like you

Winning a Best of CES award is all well and good, sure, but it's not enough to bring your device to market. That, friends, is what Kickstarter is for. Simple.TV is ready to bring its mobile TV / DVR device to market, but it needs the help of some enthusiastic supporters with a little pocket money to spare. The company's been working to make the device a reality and is "close enough that we need to start ordering parts and getting the production pipeline turned on," which, naturally, in where people like you come in. To help achieve its $125k goal, Simple.TV is offering up a unit for a $125 pledge (down from its "already super low price of $149"). Higher pledges will get you fun things like a Roku XD. More info can be had in the video after the break.

Shot Shot Pirate is a fun, simple physics game

shotshotpirate
Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you're cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It's not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks - it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it's gone, you lose. But don't worry! If you don't make it on the first try, it's very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it's a cute game. I've seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise - a few minutes of pure time wasting!

Report: Values of small used cars fall in lockstep with gas prices

Used Mini Coopers for sale

The Detroit News reports used small-car prices are plummeting right along with fuel prices. The news comes courtesy of a National Automobile Dealers Association study, which says gas prices have dropped an average of 3.5 percent compared to last year. In yet another shocking reminder of just how short buyers' memories can be, analysts predict light trucks will take home the largest share of car sales this month. Even so, used car sales in general are expected to fall off by around two percent. Truck sales, meanwhile, will likely only see a 1 percent dip.

Compare that to used compact and mid-sized models, which are expected to see their values drop by 2.4 percent. Dealers may have a hard time selling used hybrids in the coming months. That's good news for buyers who've been waiting to jump into a more fuel efficient model. After all, it's not a question of if gas prices will climb back up, but when.

Rossi hopes Ducati’s progress is real

Valentino Rossi is keen to see if his wet-weather podium in France and Ducati's promising Mugello test translate into a genuine step forward in this weekend's Catalunya Grand Prix. Second place in the rain at Le Mans was Rossi's best MotoGP result since he moved to Ducati at the start of 2011, and ended a 12-month wait for his second podium finish with the squad.

Copper-nickel nanowires from Duke University could make ubiquitous printable circuits

Nanowires

Nanowires, although they're building steam, still have to overcome the not-so-small problem of cost -- they often have to use indium tin oxide that's not just expensive, but fragile. Duke University has developed copper-nanowire films that could remedy this in style. The choice of material is both a hundred times less expensive to make than indium and is much more durable. It's flexible, too: if layered on as a coating, the nanowires would make for considerably more viable wearable electronics that won't snap under heavy stress. The catch, as you might suspect, stems from the copper itself, which doesn't conduct as much electricity as indium. The nickel will keep your copper electronics from oxidizing faster than the Statue of Liberty, however. Any practical use could be years away, but further successes from Duke could quickly see printable electronics hit the mainstream power and power our dreams of flexible displays.

Shazam's Top Ten Summer Jams [Music]

We always get a kick out of data-driven predictions of which songs will be hits in the following year. Anyone can have an opinion, whereas millions of opinions might be slightly more right - at least when it comes to predicting something with mass appeal, and that defines a hit song. More »

Noctua developing noise-cancelling PC fan, will demo at Computex

Noctua developing noise-cancelling PC fan, will demo at Computex

Try as we might to block it out, we just can't stand the whirring of our PC fan when it starts to act up. There may be an end to our cringing, as Austrian company Noctua is gearing up to debut a fan with integrated noise cancellation at Computex. The cooling fan to be shown in Taipei is only a prototype, but we know it's a Noctua NF-F12 model that uses noise-control technology from RotoSub. Luckily, Computex is less than a week away, so we'll soon have a better idea of whether this fan can keep our PC from sounding like a 777 ready for takeoff... we're sure our coworkers would appreciate it.
