Dell’Orco, Reip, Stergio Score at Okayama

The Okayama International Circuit (aka TI Circuit Aida between 1992-2004) was the host for the eight week of the iRacing.com Grand Prix Series. The course was built in 1992 and hosted the Formula One Pacific Grand Prix in 1994 and 1995; both events were won by Michael Schumacher in his early title-winning years. In qualifying Italian Max Dell’Orco would continue on his supreme form as he positioned his Williams-Toyota FW31 on pole position this week ahead of Jake Stergios, the latter would however be absent from Friday’s Strength of Field (SoF) online race. Starting next to Dell’Orco on the front-row would be Australian Danny Davidson followed by Ryan Terpstra. As the race got underway, there would be a big shuffle in the positions as Terpstra got off to a flying [...]

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download
Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading -- a save button is still presented, of course, in case you're convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We'd like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon -- like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won't notice the icon or change in wording as they'll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you'll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time

SPDY in Google Chrome
We're not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you're currently using Google's Chrome browser you're probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection -- but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we're not sure why SPDY hasn't received more coverage -- it's awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY's proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually 'trying it out,' your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it's rather hard to see its effects. Google's sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

Tasty Planet is a fun flash game where you eat everything in sight

tastyplanet
So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by "eating" the dirt; or so he thinks. That's how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you're not really a toilet cleaner after all -- you're a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that's smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow -- and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it's a really cute game, and there's no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you're able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can't touch any critter larger than yourself - you'll get "bitten" and become smaller. In the beginning you're so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you're big enough that touching larger animals doesn't kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you're not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don't touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It's available for iOS, too.

Solberg: Fourth place achievable

Ford's Petter Solberg is targeting fourth place on this week's Rally of Portugal as he attempts to make up for crashing out of the lead in the rain on Friday. The Norwegian slid off the road on the second stage yesterday, but has bounced back with fastest times today. The 2003 world champion is currently running in ninth place, more than two minutes down on Patrik Sandell's fourth-placed Mini, but he is sure he can bag more points over the second half of the event.

Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

balance
Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is "above" the windows. It doesn't push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid - and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It's a very tricky game - one I wouldn't recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.

Justin Bieber, 'Watch Your Back': Carly Rae Jepsen Loves Pranks Too!

'I'm going to give him a run for his money,' Bieber protégé tells MTV News of recent 'Punk'd' mastermind.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/shows/punkd/series.jhtml">"Punk'd"</a> kicked off in a big way Thursday night. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> was enlisted to host the premiere episode of the new season, and he didn't shy away from pulling fast ones on his A-list friends. </P><P> </P><P>Bieber made Taylor Swift believe she ruined a wedding, leaving her in tears. And when he pranked MTV's own Rob Dyrdek, he caught on and ended up joining forces with the Biebs to get Sean Kingston instead; the stunned singer stood up for an angry assistant who drove her boss' car into a restaurant. Bieber also double-crossed Miley Cyrus, who thought she was pranking him, but he ended up fighting the kids she sent out to poke fun of him. She definitely wasn't expecting that and ended up pretty shocked by the reverse prank. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:754763/cp~vid%3D754763%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A754763" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2010/06/25/jessica-jarrell-justin-bieber-water-gun/">Bieber is a known prankster</a> in real life, and his pal and <a href="/news/articles/1681379/justin-bieber-carly-rae-jepsen-songs.jhtml">label signee Carly Rae Jepsen</a> opened up to MTV News about his punker side &#8212; and proudly said she's ready to take him on anytime. </P><P> </P><P>"I haven't seen that side of him myself yet, but I heard he's a bit of a prankster, which is good. Justin Bieber Makes Justified Leap To Manhood

Above the Buzz breaks down the teen star's leap from tween-hood to maturity with 'Boyfriend,' a la Justin Timberlake.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>In 2002, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/timberlake_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Timberlake</a> blew everyone's minds when he dropped <i>Justified</i>, his star-making solo album. It propelled him from tween-dream poster boy to legitimate pop star. </P><P> </P><P>Exactly 10 years later, there's another young singer who is looking to make the same leap. When <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> dropped <a href="/news/articles/1681772/justin-bieber-boyfriend-mike-posner.jhtml">"Boyfriend"</a> earlier this week, he laid down the gauntlet and declared his pop-star manhood. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:753202/cp~vid%3D753202%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A753202" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>His transition is one that Timberlake faced a decade ago as he looked to carve a new path for himself in a post-'NSYNC world. With grinding, ear-busting production from <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/neptunes_2_/artist.jhtml">the Neptunes</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/timbaland/artist.jhtml">Timbaland</a>, the onetime boy-bander created an album that sounded unlike anything his fans had heard before. Sure, he had teased it on 'NSYNC's last album, <i>Celebrity</i>, but this album was different &#8212; it was all Timberlake. It was sexy and definitely much edgier lyrically, with him singing about girls and sex in a more-mature way. </P><P> </P><P>At the time, he faced the incredibly difficult pop conundrum of having to grow up right before an audience. That's the challenge Bieber now faces. At 18, he can't stray too far from his <i>My World</i> days, but in order to grow as an artist and a person, he also can't make "Baby" over and over again. </P><P> </P><P>And, honestly, who would want him to? Edgy and sexy feel like the innate next step for the teen star, with Usher as his mentor &#8212; a dude who made a name for himself singing songs about the things he does in the bedroom and flaunting his abs all over town. Although, it's interesting to note that Bieber chose to follow in Timberlake's footsteps. A little history lesson: Timberlake once was in a bidding war to sign Bieber on as his prot&#233;g&#233;. Usher won, and the rest is history. </P><P> </P><P>"Boyfriend," Bieber's lead single off his <a href="/news/articles/1681863/justin-bieber-believe-album.jhtml"><i>Believe</i></a> album, set for release later this year, is straight from the Timberlake blueprint. With production from Mike Posner and Mason Levy, the song is the perfect blend of hip-hop, vintage Michael Jackson-flavored R&B and pop. It's not a far cry from JT's "Like I Love You" thematically: A young man meets a young woman and uses a song, full of bleeps and beats, to declare all the reasons they should be together. Consider all the young women across the world sold on every one of his swag-heavy arguments. </P><P> </P><P>It's easy to harp on Bieber for playing it very close to the Timberlake playbook. But, why shouldn't he? Timberlake seems more focused on movies than music; Bieber's filling the blue-eyed soul void left by Timberlake's absence on the charts. And with A-list assistance from Timbaland (yes, Timberlake's producer), Diplo and will.i.am, <i>Believe</i> just might make us all believe in the power of Bieber. </P><P> </P><P>With the single poised for a <a href="/news/articles/1681935/justin-bieber-boyfriend-believe-release.jhtml">huge debut</a> and radio embracing the teen in a bigger way than ever before, now might be the perfect time for Bieber to become everyone's musical boyfriend. So, grab your fondue pot, get your swaggie on, and blast the track. You know you want to.</p>

Samsung Galaxy S 'value pack' comes to Korea, adds ICS features to Gingerbread

Galaxy S

Despite some confusion as to whether it was or wasn't real, the fabled Samsung 'value pack' for original Galaxy S phones (the 'GT-i9000' GSM version, that is) has now started rolling out, beginning in Samsung's native South Korea. The pack attempts to make up for the fact that the OG Galaxy S isn't getting an official Ice Cream Sandwich update by bringing a handful of high-profile ICS features to the current version of Gingerbread. Same goes for the mid-range Galaxy K and Galaxy U.

These include face unlock, the ability to snap photos while recording video, enhanced photo editing features, and improved folder functionality in the Launcher. We're there are some who will settle for nothing less than a full ICS update, but it's nice to see Samsung offering something to owners of the Galaxy S, which launched in mid-2010 with Android 2.1 Eclair. The good news for anyone still holding out for ICS is that there's a great selection of Android 4.0 custom ROMs available for the phone, if you're willing to root.

No word on anyone outside of Korea getting this update, and we're not holding our breath when it comes to the U.S., where original Galaxy S hardware (and branding) is all over the place.

Domenicali confident Massa can prevail

Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali says Felipe Massa's performance during the 2008 season should act as a reminder that the Brazilian's poor start to 2012 can be overcome.
